3rd Annual West Coast Hands-On Metal Scraping Class

Richard King of King-Way Scraping Consultants will teach a class of 36 hours (4 1/2 days) condensed into 3 days. Fri. May 31 to June 2 in Oakland. 8am-6pm. It will be intense!  All needed materials will be provided.

The instructor limits the class to 8 so he can give each student the necessary individual attention. He will teach you to hand-scrape, hand 1/2 moon flake, Biax Power Scrape and 1/2 moon Flake. You will learn about leveling and aligning ways; how to straighten and scrape a tapered gib; how to epoxy Rulon / Turcite / Phenolic and scrape and discuss the revolutionizing product of Moglice; how to repair lubrication issues; how to scrape a ID bearing, how to rebuild a spindle. Students can bring along a personal project and we will rebuild it in the class. In past classes students have scraped their lathe compounds, straight-edges, Milling machine tables, repaired there Mini lathe or mill, learned how to scrape the bottom of a precision level, etc. In part of the class the instructor will discuss and use a spirit level and the King-Way Alignment gage (invented by his father) to level and align a machine, and discuss how to rebuild lathes, surface grinders, milling machines, etc. He will teach how to straighten and scrape a gib; where and when to half-moon oil flake and many other tricks of the trade of machine tool rebuilding.

The instructor is a journeyman machine tool rebuilder/builder. He was taught to hand scrape by his father in the 1960s. In 1984 he started teaching scraping at GM and now has taught at 8 divisions of GM, Rolls Royce, Cummins, John Deere, and at US Naval bases. He has taught at over 40 new machine builders in the US and around the world.

Students are welcome to bring lathe compounds, milling machine tables, or straight edges to work on.

Cost $750. $375 to hold your place. $375 at beginning of class. Deposit refundable if you cancel by May 15.
