Columbia Fire and Iron June 27-28 Hammer -in

When: June 27 & 28.

Where: 55 minutes west of Spokane via Highway 291 through
Tum Tum, Washington. Site is Steve McGrew’s lake place, a private property about 7 miles southwest of TumTum by boat, or 6 miles west on Hwy 291 then about 2.5 miles south on Amy Lane Dr Way by car. Map is available at http://www.columbiasmithing.org/events/columbia-fire-and-iron-june-hammer-in/

Schedule: 8 am until 8:00 pm Saturday; 8 am until 5:00 pm Sunday.
This hammer-in will be focused on “back to basics”, with hands-on workshops in:

  • making, hardening, and tempering chisels and punches
  • making tongs
  • forge welding
  • handle twists: simple twist, grooved twist, chiseled twist, pineapple twist, spiral basket
  • If you have a touchmark, be sure to bring it because at this event we will begin the “blacksmithing chain” to remind us that we are a community of people who share a love of the blacksmith’s craft.
  • Tailgaters are welcome

Accommodations: The closest store is in TumTum, 20 minutes away. Spokane is 50 minutes away. Some snacks and drinks will be available for sale at the event, but no meals are provided, so bring your own food. A walk-in Avista campground is available about a mile west of the cabin. Camping near McGrew’s cabin is okay as well. No campfires are permitted, except possibly at the prepared campfire spot between McGrew’s cabin and the lake. Gas and charcoal BBQ’s are okay in approved sites.

  • Water and electricity are available at the cabin; electricity at the shop.
  • Forges will be set up in the spacious shop with concrete floors.
  • Fishing & swimming in the lake is okay.

Registration: The $15 per day attendance fee includes membership in Columbia Fire & Iron. All people who attend must be or become members of the association, and must sign a liability release when they arrive at the site. No blacksmithing experience is required; hands-on workshops are included in the attendance fee. You can register through PayPal by sending payment to Treasurer@Columbiasmithing.org. Please indicate how many days you will be attending, 1 or both days.
