Forging a Japanese-Style Chef’s Knife: Bridgetown Forge

Date/Time
Date(s) - 10/22/2017 - 10/23/2017
9:00 am - 4:00 pm

We will forge a 7-inch, Japanese-style chef’s knife out of a high-carbon steel bar, stamp it with your initials, harden it to produce a Japanese-style differential heat treatment, temper it, attach a handle, and hand-hone it to a razor sharpness on a water stone. The class will also cover the ergonomic forging method, the theory and practice of heat treating steel, selection of proper sharpening tools, and hand-honing a knife. The knife, and anything else you make is yours to take home.

October 22-23 (Sat-Sun), 9am-4pm, and then a wrap-up class the following week (Sunday the 29th), 9am -11:30am. If unable to attend the wrap-up part, please let me know, as accommodations can easily be made.

The cost is $460, which includes all materials and safety equipment. No previous blacksmithing experience required.

The class is limited to 9 students.

If interested, please send a $150 deposit check to: Arnon Kartmazov, 212 SE 79th ave., Portland, OR 97215. The remainder is due on first day of class.
