Ypres Poppies

PoppyNext fall there will be a large blacksmith event in Ypres, Belgium.  Here is a quote about it:

In the War of 1914 -1918 blacksmiths and farriers were indispensable in sustaining the war effort on all sides. In September 2016, hundreds of blacksmiths from around the world will come together in Ypres to remember all those affected by the war and to create in one week, a Cenotaph based on the internationally recognized icon, the Flanders Field Poppy.

If you want to look at the event details go to http://www.ypres2016.com

Poppy Cenotaph MaquetOver 2000 poppies are needed and they are asking for volunteers to make and send them.   Jim von Mosch will be spearheading the NWBA’s participation in this project.  At this Mentoring Center event Jim will guide NWBA members in the forging of poppies to send as our contribution to the WWI Memorial. We are committing to 100 poppies.  The poppy is a good beginner project, all who are interested in participating are welcome, AND NEEDED!!!

The poppies will be forged from blanks (cut out by Brent Christiansen of Creative Metal Arts), and should be fairly simple to make.

This is for anyone, beginners included!

Jim will be bringing 100 or so blanks  and a couple of hardy tools.  If they have good cross-peen hammers everyone should bring one.  Yours, Jim

You can be part of this worthwhile international effort, just show up at the event ready to forge!
