Recently I wrote a story about how the West's drought lowered the water level at our local reservoir, Detroit Lake, so much that a few as-yet-unseen artifacts from the Old Detroit townsite appeared.

I am in follow-up mode now. Having just completed a second story about the wagon, I'm moving on to the octagonal pit. I've also attached a photo of it, taken just before the lake reclaimed it.

A reader (from Texas, I think), said he thought this might be a blacksmith's "slack tub." It's location is consistent with that idea, but I've never heard of a slack tub that looks like this. It's concrete-lined, about six feet across and just a few feet deep.

I am seeking any and all historic information you and/or your members can give me.
