Hi
i've wanted to do small garden gates and driveway gates for awhile.. but before i jump in, i'd like to read some intro stuff on the subject...
like how to make the hinges, design the gate for sturdiness ( no sag or wobbles ), how to make something that'll stand up to time.. how long arches were bent ( ring roller or whatever )
i'd like to have a good foundation on the subject, then i'd feel better jumping in it

i've looked on this site
http://www.artisanideas.com/ca.....jhtm?cid=2

and i'm totally lost on which book is good or not ..... i realize the books with Yellin, Whitetaker, Schmirler should be good, but do they cover basics as well ?

any advice would be appreciated

Greg

By FAR the best book for how to's for gates etc. is the one by Peter Parkinson on Architectural Ironwork. Lots how to info and pictures of classic gates and contemporary. I have a couple of Shmirler books the Kuhn book and blacksmiths cookbook. They are all good books and are worth buying at some point, but all together they don't have as much of the nuts and bolts info about the structure and hanging of gates as Peter's book does.

thank you, that is what i'm looking for " the nuts n bolts" of gate building
- i generally don't have the chance to take courses on how to do stuff, so reference books really mean the world to me

Greg, One of the best series of books is by CoSIRA. Photographed books of full detail in making totally forged gates and grilles, plus a catalogue of drawings. Excellent!

To make it even better they are now FREE! No lie, just download them:

Thirty years ago I bought them and they have been a constant help in the shop.
