Met one of the neighbors of my shop yesterday, and one of his activities has to do with a kung fu school in Seattle.

Part of the training involves sticking one's hand into bowls of sand, then beans, and so on.

One of the later stages is a bowl of iron "pellets" (maybe sinker size, maybe marble size) - which they actually want to be rusty. (They're never sure what things are just tradition, and what things actually work better.)

Anybody know of a source for such things premade, or anybody local have time to make these things at a reasonable cost? If so let me know and I'll give him your contact info.

(I'm not sure what size, but I'm thinking something cut off of round bar, forged into a small egg shape, and then put in a vibratory bowl or polishing device to make finger friendly. Then sit outside in a bowl of water to rust!)

I'm sure a mechanic/machine shop would have several discarded ones.
I remember getting steel ball bearings as a kid and using them as "bullets" in my toy muzzle loader, and later as ammo for my wrist rocket. I remember them being exactly as you describe.

Hand forge steel marbles at a reasonable cost. It's not very likely. Define reasonable.

I would use old ball bearings. You may have to buy new if you can't find a source for enough scraped. Should still be cheaper than forging them.

Good luck!

King sells plain steel balls, which are less precisely made than real ball bearings, for a buck apiece for 1" size.
Cast iron for .50 each.

I doubt you will find em much cheaper than that new, unless you buy thousands.

C/V joint ball bearings. There are 6 in each c/v joint.

Find automotive shops in your area and ask them to keep the c/v joints for you. I have a bucket beside my tool-box, but I am here and you are there.
