I am sure most of you all are at the conference this weekend but if you had to stay home to take care of the dog or something we are having an iron smelt in Quilcene Saturday April 30. It is really more of an excuse for a party and not a HammerIn sort of event. I am no expert, this will be my third smelt. The first one I didn't get any iron but everybody had a good time, the second try I got about an 8 pound bloom and everyone had a good time and now I am hoping the third try is the charm. It's late notice but if you are curious about what it looks like PM me and I will put you on the A list. The weather is supposed to be nice. Todd

I hope it went well.

They built a traditional Japanese tatara smelter at the conference this weekend and made a batch of tamahagane steel. That was very cool to watch.

I'd love to see your process some day.

You would certainly be welcome to see it but I have to say the process wasn't too successful this time. I didn't get a bloom but instead I got a bunch of little pieces. Only abut four pounds. I had trouble with the airflow, I think there got to be a dam of solid slag behind where the air came in so the actual hot chamber got to be pretty small. Or at least that is my hypothesis. It was a great party however, sunshine and the whole bit. Todd
