I would also like to join as a new member and register free with membership. Previous posts have informed me that I have to wait and do this at the site.
But by time I got there for my first visit ever last spring, I had no idea how to join in any of the hands-on demos and classes; it seemed as if it was already too late.
Any help on being a little more organized this year, at joining as a new member and getting in on some of the classes before they fill up? Thanks!

And I'll add if you have any issues grab someone and ask, most would be thrilled to help a new member. Anyone sitting at registration should be able to steer you towards the right spots
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Hey all:
I am looking for folks who want a ride to the spring conference from the Eugene, Oregon area. We'll be taking my 30 foot motorhome. It sleeps 3. Two of the beds are taken. Room for two on the floor, or you might bring a tent or ??? Handy to have cooking facilities, place to hang out when worn out from swinging a hammer etc. I figure it will cost $500 - $600 for round trip. The more who share in the cost, the cheaper for everyone. Reply here or pm me. The conferences are a Blast!!!:spin:

Thanks. Larry, I will be grabbing helpful people; I did last year to find Paul Thorne to get into his home workshops. Got into only one, and want more!!
But last year I was wandering around at the convention, missing out on all the classes.
I also want to meet anyone who will be at BTC's welding rodeo, so I can get in on that. Will be there helping out as a welding student already, and want to join in on the demos as much as possible.

I was one of the judges last year at the BTC Welding Rodeo, and years ago, my shop had a team that competed.

The welding rodeo is a lot of fun.
One team comes from Europe every year to compete.
Here is a slide show of past winners-

most are welded, as opposed to forged, but, usually at least one team every year brings along a forge and does at least a little hot work...

Ries, I met Bob Thomas at the NWBA last year, but want to meet him again. I took a single one of Paul Thorne's classes, and have been wanting back in more of them ever since. Hope to see you Friday.
There will be several blacksmiths at BTC at the welding Rodeo (May 20 and 21); I will be there (required of students), and want to join NWBA at the convention, and wear my NWBA card or nametag or something, so they will know I am "one of them" and know that I'mserious about joining in on their demo classes.
Also, one thing I didn't find looking, reading and clicking around the site: it's easy to find out what days it is and how to join at the event, but where are the starting times? Did I miss a schedule somewhere?

Demonstrations and hands on begin at 0800 HR. Friday and Sat. 0900 on Sunday.
The schedule was published in the Hot Iron News and I think it may be here on the web site. Look on the "News" page. Any previously published schedule has been changed some. Current schedules will be available on site.
This isn't a "convention" in the conventional sense. All attendees must be an NWBA member and will be issued an ID button at registration. We'll know who you are...
I'd provide more of what I think I know but I'm trying to get my kit together to head out myself.
Bring your favorite hammer and safety glasses, plan to take notes. Steel toes wouldn't hurt either. Dress for all kinds of weather, RAIN, COLD, and etc. Most buildings are partially open and not heated.
I, and several dozens of other folk, will be wearing a hickory shirt, double front logger jeans, hat, safety glasses, white hair, and a paunch for stability.
We'll see you there. Say HI!

Here's a short low-res movie of the tatara smelter being fired at the Spring Conference. In this scene Fe2O3 (hematite) is being added to charcoal fire. The heat became so hot that it melted some of the chimney flue liner bricks.

I really want to Thank everyone for making our Spring Conference a great time. Ries and Bart were amazing, all the volunteers turned this huge event into a success, our Hands on, Open forging areas, and Repousse area were all top notch. And I think we are going to have an Awesome Gong and Stand for Western States! Thanks for all the hard work.
See you there....
