I've been at this about five years, now, after wanting to do it for about 30. The spring conference at Mt Vernon was a great experience--got to know some folks, learned a ton of stuff, and started to feel more like a member than an onlooker. The hands-on area was especially rewarding. Getting off the bleachers and making something instead of just watching can be intimidating at first, but it's an opportunity not to be missed. Not only did i get tips from experienced smiths, but I even got a teaching experience that I'll not soon forget. Looking forward to the next one... and many more.
