A good friend of mine Steve Zorchack rip, took this pic near the CO/WY border early morning 1975 -10f. The monster used to pull a train load of big shots down from Cheyenne to the Denver Stock Show.Steve, was obviously a train pervert, as well as a blacksmith and photographer......I think of the picture as ''light at the end of the tunnel'' some days....Others I dream of being the engineer.
The 8444 was one of four built to pull trainloads across the vast stretches of the American west at 100mph. Six 80''driver wheels,486ton and is the only locomotive never retired by the UP. The American Locomotive Co where it was built must have been a grand shop........
