I think I may try my hand at making some knives but I dont have a belt sander so I thought I might as well make one.

Do any of you have some good designs? Im open for sugestions for a good cost affective sander.
I dont mind spending a bit to build a good one, but at the same time I dont want to break the bank at this point.

thanks
Ryan

Mike Limb in KFalls has a great design that is lazer cut and easily assembled. His email is
mlimb@charter.net. You might feel him out as to what the cost is.

I built and use one of these..
http://www.polarbearforge.com/.....r_kit.html

I have been really happy with it... I have a Square wheel and a Burr King and really like this grinder better..

I posted some pictures of the build here someplace...

Whatever you are, be a good one.

hey larry looks neat, do you mind me asking roughly how much it cost to build? in parts anyway.

I heard there are some plans in the 50.00 knife shop book, but I seem to have lost my copy. i know its in my old bedroom at my parents house, now the question is where!

I bought a 10" contact wheel from Grizzly... about $90 the $250 for the kit.. and I think about $40 for the drive wheel..... I had a 1 1/2HP motor.... So about 400 bucks.. Not dirt cheap but considering I own a couple of several thousand dollar grinders and this one is my favorite... I think its a bargain

Here is a picture of mine...

Hi Ryan, I have two home made 2 X 72 grinders, one uglie but will grind like crazy, the other Wayne Goddard, inspired, from his book, slower speed than his, excellent for finishing and sharpening knives. Take a look, at the next Goeduk, meet.

Get a copy of Wayne Goddard's "The $50 Knife Shop." Several proven grinder plans therein.

No matter where you go... there you are.

Ryan,
The book is on the counter. I have some other parts in the loft that might be usable too.

I like the Polar Bear Forge kit.

Has anyone here built or used the No-Weld Grinder?

Ryan, have a Grizzly cart wheel that can be used as a idler. I think Wayne Goddard used one as a drive wheel for one he made.

Here are a couple of pictures of mine. It is my design based on several that I stole from online. It is a pretty simple that started with a hitch receiver and some 2X2 tubing. It seems to work fine, though it is the only one I have ever used so I don't have much to base it on. It uses the Grizzly 10 " wheel that I bored out and put bearings in. I turned the rest of the pulleys and idlers myself. I really like the VFD speed control on a three phase motor. I had the motor and it was cheaper to buy the convertor that allows for variable speed than buying a new single phase motor. The good thing is I am in Quilcene just down the road from Chimacum, in fact I teach as Chimacum High School, so you could come see it in action. Todd

No, that wasn't me, I would be curious to know who it was for though. But I just noticed your post for a friend of a friend's anvil. I am looking for an anvil for the high school shop. I teach woodworking and am slowly gathering metal working tools as the budget allows. The kids are very excited about the possibility of pounding on some metal. We have a forge but not really anything to pound on. Do you know the price of the anvil? Or how might I get in touch with her? Thanks Todd

oh thats good because i guess the guy bought it off ebay for about a grand it was a 250 lb or so anvil
I guess he said it was some special anvil that was going to rebound so well it would do half the work for him and so on. and that he was going to open a samurai sword school out in quill.

i was quite amused when i heard the story from the truck driver the next day. some peoples kids, i swear.

i live out on egg and i, where are you located?

Interesting, I haven't heard about any samurai school but who knows. I'd like an anvil that did half my work too, we all have to dream. I am just a mile out on East Quilcene Road. Todd

I remember a guy about 4 years ago who said he was building a traditional forge out near bellevue to give demonstrators from japan a place to work. But I have no idea what became of it. If the guy you know is building a school, I would be interested in talking to him and seeing his setup..Or was this a case of story time as well.

I haven't heard of any such story. Quilcene is small population wise but it is spread out over a lot of ground and there are lots of folks out in the woods doing lots of things you don't hear about. Todd
