I took a workshop at Daves new school this weekend... Intro to knife making is probably not a class I would have sought out but A friend and fellow blacksmith was signed up and Dave is a good friend... So I figured it was more fun than could otherwise be had this weekend... Of course Nick bailed on us after talking me into taking the class with him... The Dirty bum... ( No hard feelings, just gotta give him a hard time) Anyway the workshop is set up so you have a choice of making a drop point skinner, a hunter or a kitchen knife out of a laser cut 1075 blank... You profile, grind and heat treat the first day... then do handle and finish work the second day... Now I am far from a knife maker, but Im not quite a total newbi either so I went ahead and bought a second blank and make two knifes.. I a actually brought in a damascus blade I had forged previously and finished it as well ( nice thing about Daves classes is he lets you work at your own pace and helps with what ever it is you need help with, even if its not on the curriculum...)
Everyone chose to do a kitchen knife... I reground the hunter into a pairing knife for my second blade..
Here is a group shot of the knifes
And a couple of phone shots of my two kitchen knives and the damacus shop knife..
Whatever you are, be a good one.

How did you put your "name" in the blade Larry, is that a stamp? did you make/have it made for other work.

Its etched using a stencil... I had the stencil from a knife workshop I took with Tom Ferry so I just took it and used Dave's etching machine after the class was finished up.. It uses a mild acidic solution and electricity to burn into the steel... Much better than a stamp I think because you dont end up deforming the blade and having to deal with making a bunch of corrections.. You can control how deep you mark it by how long you etch.. The unit is available for about $150 from knife making supply outifts and you can order stencils online or make your own.. http://www.usaknifemaker.com/s.....be8513f6cf

Dang. I need to go on a diet. The scale says I've put on 30 pounds but I really don't care what the scale thinks. But seeing that picture makes me wanna have a salad for lunch!

You might have thought the same when you saw my videos. But that's not really my stomach. You see I had an implant put in many years ago just so I would look like all my blacksmith friends! Really.:mstickle:

I been makin knives a while- those are organic tool rests for grinding blades!
I am taking the next class from Dave, this coming weekend. I have made and sold many knives but I have never seen anyone else make one from start to finish. I am really looking forward to the class.
