This is a Centaur Cast Iron forge. Do I clay line the firepot and the pan? Or just the pan? Or just the firepot? And if so, how thick???

It's not absolutely necessary. Pile coal into the forge and let it act as its own insulative layer. The fire will only build where the blast comes thru the tuyere.

Claying an iron forge often just makes it rust out that much faster due to trapped moisture between lining and hearth.

Good Morning,

Use it, Don't clay it. Don't put refractory in the pan. If you want to try to preserve it, Hi-Temp paint. Around the fire-pot nothing will stay put, you will be pushing coal and coke into the center of the fire-pot, as you use it.

Say a prayer of Thanks that you now have a good coal forge. It doesn't need any special treatment. Make or build a cover over the top, so the heat will draw air/smoke up the flue. Then you won't be growing black oysters!! RAW OYSTERS!! Yummy!!

Fire that muther up and heat some iron. No clay. The pot is made to use as is. Just don't sprinkle too heavy when controling the fire.:stomp:

I fired her up today and she is a fire-breathing Dragon compared to my little hand-pump rivet forge! but the coal is very smoky, so I need to devise a different exhausting system for my suburban garage.

Open both doors and set up a 24in fan to circulate the air Once the green coal coaks up most of the smoke will quit:dance:.
Keep it up. Pretty soon you will have to make something for the wife, girlfriend, mother.:confused:

Thanks for the encouragement Gene! Thanks to you I will give it another try. Perhaps I should try it at night when there are less folks walking and snooping about...

Scott Lee,

How has your forge held up since 2012? Have you lined it with clay or other material? If so how? and has it cracked.

I own a cast iron forge I plan on firing it up as soon as I can. But I have that question Hamlet had : to clay or not to clay.
