Hi,

I was talking to my family and the subject of diamonds and fire came up. I realize diamonds can be burned. Will they burn hotter than coal? Is there more potential energy stored in them?

Thanks!

I've never burned a diamond. Back when I was a sailor I did "burn" enough cash I may as well have burned a diamond.

Bituminous has more BTU per pound than lignite, and anthracite has a little more BTU per pound than bituminous. So I'd predict diamond has at least a smidge more BTU per pound than anthracite.

Just don't let your wife or girlfriend know you're experimenting with "her next present" in this manner!:o

No matter where you go... there you are.

In a regular atmosphere, e.g. oxygen present, a little over 1600 F. Without oxygen, reducing, it's up toward 4000 F. or higher.

What's even better? When I read the replies to my wife, her only comment: "we could TOTALLY do that!".

That's how I know I won the marriage lottery!

Once upon a time, I remember Daryl Meier discussing his attempts to forge weld diamonds into the center core of a blade. I don't think it turned into anything useful, but it was the sort of experiment complimentary to his sense of daring. If it had been practical, none of the blade makers would be chasing off after wunderstahls and unobtainium.
