I started a new project today and discovered that the grate at the bottom of my coal forge has broken out. Bummer I guess I got my moneys worth. I have been using it for 30 years. I got one of Ron Wailes ribbon forges last year at the conference. I haven't used it very much except got some leaf work. Well, it got a work out today. Most of the work was done at 2 lb of gas. the material was mostly 1/2 in round and square working four pieces at a time. But the real kicker was faggot welding 1/2 round to make larger leaves. at 10 lbs of gas reached a very satisfactory welding heat on 2 in laps with little scale. Made some bundles of 1/2 square x 3. 1 1/2 long plus the stem Good even heat very high yellow for the entire length, the welds took on the first heat. Scale was at a minimum. Welded twice more and made some larger leafs. very happy with the results.
I have used homemade gas forges a lot but they were nothing compared to Ron's product.
For those in the market or are interested these are well worth looking at. He stands behind his product and they are very well designed and made. Yes you could make your own. I have several times and I have purchased a factory forge in the past, but have never been as satisfied with the results as I am with Ron's ribbon forge. He is a NWBA member and an all around good guy.

It was surprisingly quiet. The fan is practically noiseless and the blast is much quieter than an atmospheric. If Ron is at the conference, he has a forge set up to demo. Look him up and check it out. Once it warms up, the gas can be turned down to suit the work. I run between 2 and 5 lbs most of the time, depending on the size of the work and how many pieces I am running. Since I am not using my power hammer, no more than four I have been running longer pieces so they stick out the back and can heat up about 8 inches, which is as much as I want to forge without power.
