Greetings all blacksmiths,

While recently surfing the forum, I came across a comment that the current board members fear technology as a threat to the tradition of our association .i understood this comment to be a critisyzem of the failure of the newest website to imeadiatly Save the whole of the blacksmith community .Come on Larry ,don't refer to us all as Luddites , that's a brash comment coming from an obviously unhappy ex board member. Don't throw rocks....come back and offer direction. You obviously have all the answers ,being all Hi- tech and all.my only salvation would be you made the comment in jest.????? One thing about the Luddites ,they were very organized for a short time. The current board of directors of the NWBA really don't want to smash the computers of the world.... Although I will have to admitt most of them (some) are infested with Colonial Puritanism . We want to move ahead we just aren't sure how yet.Needless to say ,we will all be all ears during Michael Bondi ' s  discussions at Western States.I hope you will be there.

Bruce I am not at all a unhappy ex board member and that many of the Board are Luddites is not my comment, it was made by Dean Mook at a board meeting.    I in no way meant it as a insult,  just that at least half of the board are not actively involved in the forum and from my interaction with them Bill, Dean and Darryl I am sure would all say the forum and internet is not there preferred method of interaction or communication.  So if you have issues with the term, take it up with Dean.   This is the second time you have publicly attacked me on what amounts to hearsay.  I am more than happy to defend any statement or action I make.  I make mistakes and try to do my best to atone for them and would appreciate if you would have the decency to ask me directly rather than attack me on a public forum.     I know you where upset over the gate incident at the Enumclaw event but again you attacked me with incorrect information.  Not to say that in anyway I was right in doing what I did but what I did is not what you accused me of or berated me for in front of the board.    I try very hard to support the NWBA and put a lot of effort into the organization.  I hope that what ever gripe you have with me can be resolved and am happy to sit down and talk about it when the opportunity arises.

Please consider I have around 1500 more posts than you on the forum,  I have more posts than any other member or non member even including Grant as the site administrator.     I have put a lot of effort into this forum, more than any other individual.    I do not make criticisms of the new format lightly nor are they uninformed or unwarranted.      I hope that through recommendations and interaction with Amy the issues can be resolved and I know Amy is working hard to improve the site for the members.    I am not  "all Hi- tech and all"   I just see value in the forum as a resource for the members and non members alike and was initially discouraged with the massive changes to a proven format.    I have no say other than that as a member of the organization.     My observation is that site traffic has plummeted since the implantation of the new format, we have lost at least one member due to this change.   Imagine something that you cared about and invested hundreds of hours in suddenly changed and alienated participants, would you not express concern?   I do not understand the reasons for these changes but I am sure they are valid.    Am I discouraged?   Yes, as I am sure you would be as well.   I am however hopeful that we can resolve the glitches and build on what we have and the forum continue to be a valuable blacksmith centered  resource

Whatever you are, be a good one.

Im sorry Bruce.....   I had a bad day and took it out on you.  You had every right to question the use of the term Luddite.

I do have a personal attachment to the group and this site in particular and hope we can work out the kinks and get things rolling smoothy again.

I'll try to be a bit less mental and childish

Whatever you are, be a good one.

I checked, I didn't get a message from you Bruce but I did have one from Lynn I didn't know about (we used to get email notifications Amy?)   And I couldn't figure out how to reply.    Seems like there should be a reply button which I could not locate.   I'll investigate further, I imagine I am overlooking the obvious

Ok Edit,   I just didn't mouse over enough buttons... Just as I figured I needed to look a bit harder.     Still cant find anything from you Bruce and Amy If we could set up at least the option for the email notification I think that's a good thing (so folks don't log in to the site often and thus would be unaware they had mail)

Whatever you are, be a good one.

Larry,
I will look into the email notification. I never did get email notification at the old site, and now think it must be something to choose when I go to my own profile and update the options. I will be researching this today and get back to here with some observations about the private message system.
thanks all for the input for things to improve, I aim to serve and your comments and critiques help.

Private Messages:

There is a prominent link on every post (when I am logged in and I look at other people's posts). It is a button at the top of the individual post box, the row of buttons is:

On the left side of the window:

  • a number that indicates the number of the thread under the particular topic. i.e. the post just above this one by larry says "6", and this one will end up with a "7".
  • a pencil = edit this post (which the poster can do (or an administrator), until there is a reply to the post- this only shows up if you are the poster and you may not see it)
  • a link symbol = gives you the permalink to that particular post. so you can refer someone else to it with a link
  • a printer = print this post

On the right side of the window:

  • PM and envelope symbol = Private message the person who posted this
  • Quote =  to reply with the quote of the post you are replying to.

AND VERY IMPORTANT:
You have to update your own profile to select receiving email messages. Go to your profile (hover over your name/avatar and you will see "profile" pop up. click on that and your profile will open.  Go to OPTIONS > EDIT GLOBAL OPTIONS.

I looked into making sending emails the default setting but I was unable to make that happen.

keep those comments coming and I will try to resolve all issues.
