Watch very little TV, but occasionally watch 'forged in fire', at least folks making something there.
Nice new hydraulic forge hammer and drop hammers, but the moderators act like the only hardening/tempering way is oil quench and pull it out when still hot enough to self temper.
Why the limit to 1870's technology ? Mods get all excited if someone quenches in water (don't get the nice flames for video effects?) and then later tempers with a torch, which is at least better than the 1890's methods.
Any modern complete heat treat for something like 4340M or 4140 takes literally days to allow full carbon solution, etc. Even 1090 is hours for best crystal structure.
Always wonder why the 'best' heat treat techniques are ignored, simply the show time limits? Even stuff I forge at home has a tempering cycle of at least 5 hours in a kiln or oven, have never invested in a salt solution.
Maybe it is just having the flames ln oil withdrawal? When I quench in oil or water, item is left in till cold.

The only thing I might think of is time limitations. Though it takes very little time to torch temper.
And you know, I have always been curious about why it seems they don't temper their blades, because they test if they are hard after the first round, so you can't temper at that time.
I would also like to say that the fact that the time limit does not allow for a full, ideal heat treatment lends to MANY of the first round eliminations.
