Gee Nick: You need to say something more than that. Are you in Tasmania,Washington, Oregon, Wisconson?? Any knowledge of metal at all? Are you near enough to Longview to take advantage of the wonderful classes we have there?Showing up at our mentoring center would be your best bet. Let folks know what you want and need. You will find many helping hands here. Best to you, Eric

Since you've posted in the Heat Treating section, I'm going to assume you specifically want beginner information on heat treating rather than forging or other information.

Tool Steel Simplified by Frank R. Luerssen & George V. Palmer - The second part of this book is little more than a huge ad for some of the steels from the plant that paid for the publication. The first half of the book is one of the best metallurgy primers I've read.

Principles of Heat Treatment by M.A. Bain, Edgar .C. Grossman - This is the Bain who discovered bainite and the Grossman who developed the Grossman quench severity test. They do a pretty good job of putting things in layman's terms.

Metallurgy of Steel for Bladesmiths & Others who Heat Treat and Forge Steel by John D. Verhoeven - Pretty good. Available online: LINK

I can provide more titles if you are interested. I can also answer (or attempt to answer) specific questions.
