Pacific Harbors Council BSA is planning a camporee event for scouts and scouters from September 19-21 at Frontier Park in Graham, WA. This event will have a variety of activities that scouts can participate in and watch, with several different kinds of displays, demonstration and training areas set up. Details about the event may be found at http://survivorcamporee.com

One feature will be a welding demonstration area. We have been working with Lincoln Electric to get this setup, and they will be providing us with all needed equipment and will be helping with promotion. However, we have a need for skilled welders willing to do demonstrations and talk about welding, perhaps even do some hands-on work with the boys. (for example, welding their initials into a piece of metal)

They have a significant amount of equipment, supplies, and safety gear that they will donate to our program if we can provide 3 people to run the area for this September camporee event.

Unfortunately, I have already made a commitment that weekend to run blacksmithing instruction for local high school JROTC cadets at a different event at Hahobas Scout Camp, so I cannot attend the Camporee event myself.

If you are available any or all days from September 19-21 and can come to Frontier Park in Graham, WA to volunteer your services to give welding demonstrations and talk about welding, we would really appreciate your help! For many of the boys attending this event, this will be the first time they will get to see and learn about welding. Most of these young men do not get much exposure to trade skills anymore, and these kinds of things can whet their appetite to learn more and grow their interest in these kinds of skills.

I'm looking both for folks to do some simple welding demonstrations as well as someone to help coordinate the volunteers and work directly with my contact at Lincoln Electric for the event.

Note that if we are able to run this event, the potential goes beyond just instructing the young men attending. The donated welding equipment and gear will then belong to Pacific Harbors Council, and it is my hope that we will be able to add welding to our metalworking program at Camp Hahobas. That could potentially allow us to offer the welding merit badge to the boys during the summer as well as welding instruction to the JROTC boys and girls groups that come after the main camp season.

If you can help in any capacity, please contact event coordinator John Ohlson at 253-380-4100 or via email at Johlson@msn.com
