I am in the design process of making a stair rail. I would like to punch the hand rail to accept a tenon on the pickets. However this design would call for an agled mortise to allow for the agle of the steps. Does any one have any experience or tips on making angled tenons on 3/4 square stock? I attached a thumbnail of what I would like to achieve.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Would it be easiest to pierce the rail squarely? An angled hole makes it difficult, then of course the tenon will be turned square to the rail stock anyway when it's headed. The monkey tool can be the usual square configuration.

Page 76 of Schmirler's book, Werk und Werkzeug des Kunstschmieds, illustrates the tools and steps in making an angled mortise. Basically, you need a bolster block with an angled hole and the rest is just like making a non-angled mortise. You would, of course, need to angle the shoulder of the tenon to fit.

In the latest issue of ''Hammers Blow'' Mark Asprey covers this subject.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Here is an good example and a way to avoid the angled tenon issue. Sorry for the duplicate without the picture. This is not my work but I've always admired it. So, I'm not sure how it is attached to the top rail, but if you are not a purist, you could tig weld the points at which they attach to the top rail. Good luck.

It seems Chad already addressed his desire on "purity" so to speak...
