Hi all! I'm not actually a blacksmith...I'm the mom of a 16 year old daughter who has been hammering on metal for several years, though, and I'm scouting for more learning opportunities for her. Some of you may know her mentor, Bob Conner (of Philip Foster Farm, Champooeg, Brooks, Fort Vancouver fame.) Please do not hold her association with him against us. 😉 Some of her work can be seen at her etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheMarmotDen

I'm also the wife of a shop rat who designed and built a wood-fired forge to use on his own projects, and we are marketing that forge through WhitloxHomestead.com, so part of my motive of being here is also to help that forge find its way to other people who will put it to good use. Glad to meet ya'll!

Has Bob talked to her about volunteering at the Fort? We do have some youth volunteers learning there. Seeing as since Bob has already been mentoring her she should fit in pretty well with knowledge of shop safety and all the rest of that right from the beginning.

Thanks, Rashelle--Bob has been looking forward to her turning 16 so she could join him in Vancouver. We haven't gotten it on the schedule yet, but it is likely to happen. For now, she is meeting him weekly at Phillip Foster again.

You're welcome. It's cool that he'll be continuing to mentor her. I really wish I'd of had the opportunity when I was younger, rather then starting out late in life. So it is great to be able to help out the youth and encourage them to chase after their dreams.
