Hell everyone I'm Jesse and I live in Renton, WA. I watched a show on Netflix a year or two ago about making a Viking sword and I don't know how to explain it I had an overwhelming sense of "Yes I want do do that." because it seemed strangely relaxing.

I know it is challenging, difficult, and takes lots of skill I'll have to earn but I am a program manager by day so I spend the work week attending meetings, writing documents, sending emails, etc and there is something appealing about taking a piece of metal and shaping it on my own time table without having a meeting to decide what it should look like, without having to answer to 3 different people on the status of it, and at the end of hours of work I will end up with a physical thing I can touch and show people not a power point project or a document no one really wants to read. I'm hoping that makes sense.

I realize a sword is way more advanced and a huge commitment so I thought maybe I'll start making a knife, see how it goes and if I like it before I go whole hog in it. So where do I even begin? Is there a class I can take? Is there a forge I can rent time on?

Dave Lisch gave a demonstration on shoestring-budget knife-making just this past Saturday at the Mentoring Center in Longview. I wish you could've been there! (Dave does teach classes, check the "Resources" tab at the top of the page for his school and others.)

Wayne Goddard's "The $50 Knife Shop" is an excellent resource for a beginner.

Our January Mentoring Center session will be a full-day open forge.

One may also get studio time at the Pratt Center: http://blacksmith.org/studio-r.....-at-pratt/

No matter where you go... there you are.

Maybe I'm just being dense, where would I look for Dave on the resources tab?

Click "Resources" and then "Blacksmith Schools." Dave's is "Studio Four."

Found it. Email sent.

The winter seems like a good time to take up a hobby that involves a fire.

Hello JesseM,  Hope something worked out with Dave Lisch.  We're way down in Eugene OR, but we are having a 5160 Knife Club hammer-In on Nov. 1st.  We're listed else where in this site.  We'll be forging knives all day, and I'll be doing some demonstrations on making knives.  Wayne Goddard will also be here as this is also a bit of a Thank You Wayne party, for all the years and articles, and books he has done to help others along the way in knife making.  He will have a collection of his own knives, and others will also be bringing their Goddard knives to show, as well as their own knives to show as well.  You're welcome to come.  Martin Brandt

I just took my first class with Dave on saturday. It was awesome. Now what?  I'd like to do it more but I live in an apartment so it's not like I can set up my own forge.

Is there such a thing as  like a maker space with blacksmith forge and tools I can join and screw around with?

Hi Jesse,

Welcome to the NWBA. Dave's a pretty good guy with a lot of knowledge. That's a good way to start, taking a class with him.

We do have an open forge once a month down in the Longview mentoring center. Normally it's a 3 hour demo then open forge after that. There are some knife and axe demo's coming up. I just haven't got the schedule for the events up yet. Still finalizing some of them for the next few months.

We do have open forge time after the demonstrations at the Mentoring Center. You could also check to see if a friend would be willing to house your tools & provide workspace in exchange for the occasional blade.
