Hello everyone,

I'm just starting out on my journey in blacksmithing.  I've been trying to educate myself over the last several months, but have yet to strike hot iron.  I'm a liberal arts major who works w/ engineers.  Over the last 15 years I've built cars, motorcycles, rifles, rc cars, watches and tube amplifiers.  But in a lot of ways, most of that was really about assembly.  I made my own parts here and there, but I think blacksmithing really appeals to me, because of the transformative property of the art.  You literally make something functional out of raw material.

I suppose wood could provide the same experience, but wood and I don't work so well together.  Lol

This past weekend I finished building a propane forge. That made me smile.

I've ordered a hammer and tongs.  They should be here in the next few days.  I'm now on to procuring an anvil and a vice.  Will let folks know how it goes.  I'm looking forward to learning from members on this forum, and providing any help I can.  I have a tendency to make memorable mistakes, so will be sharing those as they occur.  If nothing else, I'm good for a laugh 🙂

Anyhow, I'm happy to be here-

Welcome pawn to the NWBA. Come check out the swaptoberfest in October if you're in the NW for some great blacksmith gear.

Don't wait until you have a real anvil to get started. You can get a lot of smaller scale work done on any old heavy chunk of steel.

Hi Donk!

Sounds great!  I'll try to catch up w/ you at the fairgrounds, but will definititely shoot you an email.  Maybe I can buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain on a few things.  I actually broke down and finally ordered a new anvil online (got free shipping) lol. In the meantime, I've been trying to get up to speed on basic metallurgy...

Anyhow, will be in touch-
