Hey guys.

Jack Thompson here from Yacolt, WA.

I've been slowly gathering all my goodies over the course of the last few years and this summer finally came across an old Buffalo Forge to complete my setup!

I've made my first horribly misshapen, yet oddly functional set of tongs and finished weatherproofing my 3-wall blacksmith shop.

I have a small 70lb anvil that my father gave me (He gave up smithing in his 70's recently) and it appears that I'm either hitting my steel too hard or forging with the wrong kind of steel. Mostly using junkyard scraps but I have some harder stainless that I think might be the culprit. After speaking with a smith friend in Idaho it seems I will need to do some serious normalizing of all my materials before I forge it.

If anybody knows of a decent 150-250lb anvil in decent shape I might be interested in trading for or buying one!

See you guys in longview at the October mentor meeting!

Thanks,

Jack

Jack, glad to have you!!!  Yes, come on up to Longview... You will be sincerely welcomed!  Most of us blacksmiths are very happy to teach, so that is where you need to be... Otherwise, post your questions on the forum here, and someone will be happy to advise.

Best,

Lynn

Thank you sir!

I really wanted to get down to the shop cleaning event this weekend to meet some folks but I'm running against the end of the season for outdoor work and I have a wood shed to build and 3 cords of wood to chop/stack!

I'll be at the next one for sure.

Question... if I brought a large stump or two out would anyone have a use for them? I know some folks don't live out in the trees like I do, so finding good anvil stands might be a challenge.

Personally, I don't think there'd be enough takers for it to be worth it. The stump stands are useful and all, but a lot of folks like the metal stands, or often just made from scrap wood like mine.

Will you be coming down next month?

I will be.

I have about 20 hours logged at the forge so far, and about 500 hours on YouTube, and 40 hours in books...

I can't wait to see actual people! 🙂
