Nice site guys. Discovered it yesterday when I was searching for blacksmithing coal.
I have a forge, three anvils, and a lot of related equipment but have not used anything since about 1995. Recently began taking things out of storage and planning a new forging setup.
I mostly worked with forging blades and grind blades from flat stock. A few photos below:
The poor things have been tucked away in a corner of the shop since 1994. A big hornless anvil of about 250 pounds is hidden in one of the barns.

Wow, I did a little research today:
The 196 pound anvil is a forged Soderfos. Hmm. A real prize!
The smaller anvil is an American Star Anvil, made between 1850-1860. Damn! Older than I thought! I think it was brought from the old family farm in Toombs County, Georgia, when the family (7 brothers, 2 Sisters, mom and pop) moved to Brunswick, Georgia around 1915. Those folks are all dead now. My dad was born in 1909 and was the third child. He died in 1994.
I will flip the Star anvil tomorrow and see if it has the "tempering hole". The reason the tip of the horn is flattened is one of my uncles, when he was a teen (WWI timing) barked his shin on the horn tip (the anvil was sitting on the shop floor). He then grabbed a nearby sledge and bashed the sharp tip with the sledge. My dad told me this story when I was about 15.
Interesting stuff!
