Some things are meant to be, I guess. A couple weeks ago I quoted a guy for a special set of hammer dies and we agreed on a price. Today I was joking with a guy on Iforge about the monster (200 lb) 8" Fisher double screw vise he had on Ebay. Mentioned that I had always wanted one. Turns out it was the same guy and he was selling the vise to pay for the dies! So we made a swap! So Kewl, I'm pumped!

VISE ON EBAY

That seems like you came out way ahead on the deal, SCORE:dance: Or those were some really complicated dies. Awesome vice, congratulations.

With shipping it was very close to a wash. And yes, they are complex dies.

Well, they were made in six sizes from 25 pounds with 3-1/2" jaws, a 120 pounder with 6" jaw all the way up to this 200 pound 8" monster. I didn't see what size Corky had.

I don't know if it was Corky's, but I did see that vise at the conference in the tailgaters' area. I remember the chain catching my eye.

So aside from outstanding toolness, what advantage does a 2 screw chain vise have over a regular post vise of the same size?

Jaws always parallel like a bench vice AND strong enough to wail on it with a hammer.

That is a great story, Grant. I can't believe you didn't already have two of those. It makes me realize that we are all connected, somehow.

Good old barter, gotta love it. I've swapped work performed for several tools as a youngster. Everybody wins & no cash out of pocket. Not to hijack this thread but there's a small vise like this one on Chicago's Craigslist. It's listed for $80. Besides looking over the lead screw for wear & obvious cracks/damage, I have no idea what to look for? Any advice from the sages would be greatly appreciated? :help:

For $80 bucks I'd jump on it in almost any condition.
