The anvil that I purchased from what I have been told is a Hay Budden 158#. However it has the name Herculies Solid Wrought Warrented on it and I'm told that Herculies was a Northwest hardware store. Any history on Herculies would be much appreciated.

To my knowledge, Peter Wright, Hay & Budden and Trenton all did private branding for large customers. Actually, they probably all were willing to do it. Imagine someone comes in and wants to buy a hundred anvils, you'd probably be will to put just about anything on them. Sounds like the person you talked to might just know what he's talking about. Certainly any large hardware store was having them private labeled from a major manufacturer.

but then there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence,
transform a yellow spot into the sun.” ~ Pablo Picasso ~

Thank you for the info. Grant. Richard Postman, author of Anvils in America, is who I spoke with, and he knew that Herculies was a hardware store from somewhere in the Northwest, but did not know much more about them. I would like to know how many anvils were made with there name on it. I love antiques especially ones that caan still be used as I am using the anvil in my little smith.

If you post some pictures of your anvil (in particular, the markings on the front of the base if any), that would help identify the manufacturer.
