The book Anvils In America lists the brand W. Cole with 'Dudley Wood' and 'Warranted' stamped below. Yours looks like it could potentially be that brand.

The author believes W Wood was a hardware exporter from England.

Mystery solved, good going Mark. Are you into anvils or do you have one of those memory glands I’m missing? OK guys, stop snickering I said “Memory glands”.

it's been fun, later!

Thank you Mark for the tip. I need to get my hands on Mr. Postman's book

My wife thought she could see W COLE, but when I checked Anvils In America's web list of anvils, that brand was not listed so I began considering other brands. I thought it looked like a William Foster, but could not find any marks typical of one. Are there any web pages that show actual pictures of anvil trademarks?

Thanks Robert. I'm interested in anvils, and my good wife bought me Anvils in America for Christmas last year. I'm fairly new to blacksmithing and the traditional equipment that went along with it, so unlike many of the cagey veterans on this forum the tools are still a novelty to me.

Unfortunately, my memory glands aren't that great either. My wife always accuses me of thinking with the wrong glands...

If you can, you should try to hold off until the next edition is printed (potentially fall of 2011). A friend has talked to Postman and there will be a LOT of new information added, particularly with the English brands. I have a Norissez, which isn't listed in the current edition, but Postman has documented a couple since the last printing.

I have held off so far because honestly I couldn't afford the book. I have been intrigued by blacksmithing since I was child and what got me forging was the inexpensiveness (if that's aword) of getting started. My most expensive purchase was my anvil and I consulted Mr. Postman before I purchased it. So perhaps the first printing will be more affordable come fall of 2011.

From what I see I would have to agree. If there is still doubt perhaps a charcoal rubbing would help.

Jim, I tried crayon rubbing without much result, the side of the anvil has many pits in it's surface. I will try the charcoal and see what it yields. I could not find any info on W COLE on the internet, must not have been a well known brand.

Did you try a knotted wire cup brush on an angle grinder followed by a thin coat of boiled linseed oil? I find this brings out a lot of the details.
