Another horseshoer use. We had a LONG discussion on IFI the other day about swedge shoe fullers filed into anvils. This groove was probably put in there as a place to finish punching holes in a shoe with your pritchel. Bruce Daniels came out with a "Bruce Daniels Special" horseshoers anvil ,I believe in the eighties,that had just such a groove ground into it. They charged a lot for the damned things and I never could see the big deal as it is simple enough to finish your holes over the hardie hole.

The groove on my anvil really looks to be well machined and the groove matches the patina of the rest of the anvil- perhaps by the manufacturer. In fact I see no machining marks in the groove. I wonder if Budden didn't have specialty models for just such a farriers needs.
