Five vintage tongs, 3 hardy's, a 100# Indian Chief vice with 6" jaws, and a Centaur forge with Champion blower. The forge firepot was extremely rusted out and I wasn't sure about it, but I bit the bullet. I got the 2 anvils for real reasonable prices, and the guy I bought the forge from was a long-time pro blacksmith and he vouched for it, so I made the trade. I worked all day on the rust removal and this is what I found underneath. It looks great.

The one with the groove is a nice farrier's anvil and would bring a premium. On the other hand, you did get a nice vise - enjoy the toys.:smug:

Seriously!? Both anvils are in good shape and the groove looks to be no more than 1/4 to 3/8 or so wide. I can't imagine not being able to work around the other parts of the face and it's convenient for making hot shoes. Maybe "everyone else" didn't see that.
Enjoy the big vise, it looks like a beast.

Ryan, because I have two other premium anvils, I decided to make these two my traders. I had been looking for a while for a nice big post vice, and had no luck up until last weekend when Les steered me over to one of his barns and showed me this beast. Needless to say I was smitten. It may not have been aperfect trade but I am finding that in southern WI and northern IL, cheap little-used Hay-Buddens are much more plentiful than big vises.
My two keepers can be seen behind the post vise in my previous pics.

It's funny how regional stuff can be. Good anvils (in any size) are relatively hard to come by here but post vises sometimes seem to grow on trees. I've never owned more than 4 anvils at any one time - and only one of those was in decent shape - but have often had 8-10 nice vises floating thru the shop.

Kevan, I totally understand. The 160# Hay Budden I bought for $150, and traded it for the forge, which is in great shape, and and the other HB with the groove I got for $275, and traded it for the vise. My two keeeper anvils are absolutely pristine; one is a 150# HB farriers anvil, and the other is a 173# West cast steel anvil. And I have my eye on a pristine Brooks 100# anvil that I might be able to get for $250, so if the trade wasn't perfect there will always be another anvil in this part of the country that I can get for a good price. I always wanted to know how much anvils are going for up in the Pacific Northwest, and whether there are many in great shape?
