As you shed gets bigger so does the size of the toys !

Ive wanted a small vertical lathe for a while, and saw this one on ebay, anyhoo, to cut a long story short this is it being unloaded at my place !

Ive had it about 3 months now, its connected up and ready to work! ( and about half way through a dulux overhaul!) - its not actually made a chip yet, but im hopeful that I can get it to pay for itself within 12 months with a couple of decent orders im tendering for!

Not sure if there is a moral to this tale yet, im guessing the next 9 months will tell! It seems to me there are some bargains to be had (tool wise) with the ecconomy being down, and money in the bank is not doing very much! Ill pit up a vid when the paints dry and its making some swarf!!

The trouble with those little lathes is that they just don't have the rigidity to good work. Don't worry, I'm sure that coat of paint will do the trick.

Waiting on the video of biiiig chips.

Wow. . . Just Wow. 😀

Hi Mark! Im slowly coming to the conclusion that trying to make and sell anything patternwelded would be more profitable if I just used some cash to light the forge with, then went home!! :running:

so yeah! might have a go at it :bounce:

I hope you have a go at it John. Your pattern welded stuff is just to pretty to deny the world of it.

I think many of us have come to this same conclusion. 'Tis the time to tool up if you can afford to.

As our pals across the pond would say ''a nice bit of kit''....Looks like you got the shop to go with it. Would it turn out cone mandrels?

I forgot about this thread!

I love my new roundabout, it has hardly been used but has done a few jobs. It was quite a sharp learing curve getting her working all sweet and nice but I like a challenge.

Im not going to say its paid for yet, but we did a high value clutch overhaul that simply would not have been possible in the time frame without the machine there so more than proving its worth,

Here she is with a clutch plate on the table a couple of months ago (only just fitted on )

This is the clutch from a 2500 ton press that we fully overhauled (clutch weighs well over 10 ton assembled up like this) - you can see Scheiss in the background!

I know a few folks with large or unusual machines. When someone questions why they charge so much, they just tell them "We're not charging for the time you're using it, we're charging for all the time it sits here doing nothing"!

I guess a clutch is a clutch. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the only clutch I've ever worked on. Only the clutch in my Vespa is probably about the size of one of the nuts on that one.

Get a big slotter to go with it and you can make all new gigantic clutch plates! And show us pictures!

I have got a large butler slotter (16" stroke) that I do internal gear cutting on clutchplates up to 6' diameter on, it has a lot of special jigs for indexing for gearcutting. Ill dig some pics out one day!
