A little before dusk last night my wife, Dorothy, took a picture of the snow on the smithy. Minutes later, it collapsed under the snow load.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda...
After getting some coffee and breakfast in me this morning, I went out to assess the situation in good light. I'll need to un-crumple the forge hood. I'll need to replace one exhaust duct. The tent is ripped from thither to yon.
The anvils, vice, and forge are covered. Anything currently exposed won't be hurt by snow or rain.
I have a functional one-brick forge in the backseat of the car, as well as the pencil torch which powers it. I have a 12 pound sledge head I can dig out of the snow and use as an anvil. I can still make things.
Options for a replacement workplace include, but are not limited to:
1) sewing up the 20' rip in the tent.
2) buying another surplus GP small tent.
3) building a wee pole barn to use as a smithy now & stoage or goat shed down the road.
4) going into debt up to my eyeballs and building a 30' x 40' pole barn a couple years earlier than origionally planned.
Option 3 is attractive to me today. An actual decision can await the melting of the snow this coming week

Lee... Aarrgghh! So sorry to hear/see your once working smithy! I have been whining and crying 'cause we have been without power for 3 days... No power means no water, no lights, and no compressor to run a spray gun... Haven't been able to do a thing in the shop for these past few days... Have paying jobs but can't get paid 'til the projects are finished!
I'll quit whining as I still have an intact workshop. And yea! the power is back on! Best of luck getting your workplace back up and running!!

Thank you all for your good wishes and help offers! They are most appreciatied.
Since the storm I've had lots of 12 hour days at work and a trip to the Tri Cities area. Cleanup is commencing slowly, but funds are accruing for concrete et al.
I've also been using some of the online engineering calculators to suss out what size round-wood I need to use, how big the footings need to be, and such. I will definitely be over-building this little goat shed!
My intent is to complete cleanup this weekend (just went back on 8 hour days today) and get the battens and mason line in place. I might even start digging for the footings if the rain isn't too bad!
I'll try to remember to get some pictures as things progress. (I keep forgetting the fancy schmancy phone my wife got me can put pictures onto the web... Just because I work at Intel doesn't mean I'm not a Luddite! )
No matter where you go... there you are.
