Clackamas Community College in Oregon City offers ongoing blacksmithing classes as a part of their welding program. :wavespin:Registration for Winter classes begins on November 13th and classes begin the week of January 7th. Beginners classes (WLD-103)are offered on Friday evening from 6-10pm, Saturday morning from 9am-1pm, and Sunday morning from 10am-2pm. There are no prerequisites for this class. There is also an intermediate class (WLD-203) for those who have completed the first class. Terms are 11 weeks so there is time to develop some hammer skills. Thanks, Larry........The classes usually fill quickly, and, because everyone is there because they want to be, there is a very positive energy. I mentioned the date that registration starts to give everyone a chance to get into the class. Online registration makes it easy and saves a trip to Oregon City. How'r things with you?

Hey Bert, coincidentally just before you posted this thread, I've been talking with one of your former students about him volunteering at Fort Vancouver. After looking up the colleges web site, I thought it'd be a good idea to ask you on here for more information regarding your classes. As I am frequently asked about other local places to learn other then the Fort. I can give them an idea of what would probably be taught there but not having went myself, figure it'd be good to get more information from you.

The WLD-103 classes are for beginners with little or no experience. There are specific projects to introduce various techniques, with time at the end of the term for personal, or selected, projects. They are limited by size and tooling. i start each class with a lecture on different subjects, such as: hammer use and ergonomics, steel types, heat treating, blacksmithing nomenclature, how gas/coal forges work, etc. I also go over the steps to make the project. When we go out to the forges I start with a demo and then it's time for the students to start hammering. I stay in the area and help the students during the rest of the class period. Classes are 4 hours long so there is plenty of time to practice and work on the projects. Anyone interested should go to http://WWW.clackamas.edu to see the description and times of the classes. Winter registration has started so, those interested can register online. The classes fill quickly. :smug:

I am a Welding student at PCC Rock Creek in Portland, OR. I have approached the head of the welding program and he has expressed interest in having a professional blacksmith come the campus and teach a non-credit course for interested students. If anyone is interested please reply to this post. Thank you
