horizontal bender primarily for the shop/field fabrication of grip rails, bent on edge. 110v hydraulic power pac, 4"x 8" cyl., stout I beam, will bend up up to 1 1/2 sq+ - It has proven to be handy.............bm

Hey Bruce.. Glad you posted this over here... We dont have as many followers as over on IFI but most there is not as much goofy crap either:p Plus you wont get reprimanded for saying freakin or damn or shit or any such thing..

So on your bender what do you have down in the guts to keep the moving pin straight?

I have a little rig like this I bolt to my table but the cylinder is in the way for making loops... Ive got a 30 ton version for a platen table, but I still haven't got my new weldsale Jesse James gave me up from LA

You can kinda make out the bender set up on the back of the table...

I like it.
At one point, I had a small one set up with my porta power- it was on a 3' piece of H beam, and you could carry the whole thing right to an already installed rail or post, and apply pressure, bend or unbend.
But It got lost in a move, some time ago.
Still have the portapower, but all that pumping is very slow compared to an electric pump.

The germans really like horizontal presses like these- not sure what they call em. In english, Bulldozer has always been the name I have heard.

Jim Garrett has a big one, but the last time I was at his shop, I had to take his word for it, as there was so much stuff piled up on it that I couldnt see it...

Well hot damm! No more PG rating. Is it so many shits etc per month or is it unlimited? Good to be here........I,m showing more of the guts here bb1 clearly shows how the ram is captured side to side by the lower pin plates and the "doughnut" underneath . That secures the bottom of the ram from lifting.bb2 shows the ram captured by the top plate. maybe a bit too redundant, but no one has ever accused me of under building anything, cept' a hammer once........also Ive never tried to bend any large stock hot say 2x2 in it, but I betcha' it could

Nice looking Bulldozer press. I would love to see more pictures of Grant's old vertical/horizontal press http://blacksmith.org/forums/t.....-Upsetting
And Phil's bulldozer press http://www.forgemasters.com.au/ (look on the lifting gear page). I do like the way yours can do full rings though.

The main thing here was for it to be portable. My 25t H press was out of the question for that. The other thing is bending curves on edge in an H press is a good way to die...bm

Ok I've been over the hill and down the pike a few times with tooling and never heard the phrase "weldsale". Larry what is it??

Its the same as an "acorn" table.

Well, almost the same.

While there were, at one time, probably a dozen US manufacturers of platen tables, now there are only two left standing-

Weldsale-
http://www.weldsale.com/
and
Acorn- http://www.acorniron.com/produ.....index.html

often times you will come across oddball, 70 year old tables with incompatible hole size or shape- these two companies still support their stuff, and sell (very expensive) tooling for them.

I should mention, that in addition to mere platen tables like weldsale and acorn, which only cost a few thousand dollars each, new, ( $6880 for a new Weldsale, plus shipping and stand) there are a few companies that make really snazzy new tables and clamping systems, which cost $20,000 and up, often a LOT up.
Like these Demmellers-

I got lucky and got a brand new platen (with stand) from Boeing surplus for 300$ Those deals are long gone as is Boeing Surplus thanks to the crooks that ran the yard. Nowadays if you can find a platen they'll run upwards of a grand and be beat to hell. Whiteside steel in Snohomish had the last local stash I know of, not sure if Pacific industrial carries them anymore.

BTW Bruce, thanks for posting- a neat compact bender. What pressure are you running that cylinder at?
I'd think an enerpac @ 5 or 10K psi would waste your average cylinder.

They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

Thanks for the closeup pics, saw it on iforge and wondered how you stabilized the ram.
Looks like a great tool.

Thats what I got sitting in my shop is a Bluco/Demmeller that I bought for Jesse at an auction this last week, cost $16,600 with the buyers premium used, this set was about $40K new.... For turning Jesse on to it and then handling the deal he gave me a brand new Weldsale that he had bought for the LA shop and never used.... I just got to get it picked up/shipped... Ive been looking for a 5 X 5 weldsale, the weldsale tables are the only ones with the indexed sq in the bottom of the hole for quick tooling.. I had a 4 X 4 and really liked it, but the 4 x 4's are only 1 1/2" thick and I was afraid I would break it with the hydraulic bending I was doing... the 5 X 5's are 2 1/2" thick...

Pacific does have a pile, but none that are great.. just the ol 5 x 5 no name tables for a grand each...

To be honest, I can't remember. I can't find it on the tag and I'm not going to wrestle around under it to install a pressure guage. I'm guesslng 1500-3000. 3000 would give it 15t +- which seems about right. It's for bending after all, which usually requires less tonage and It's intended use wasn't to tweak the big stuff. I think if the cyl was pushing 25 t + it would wreck the frame......bm

Hi Bruce

Good to see you over here. I saw your post on IFI about the bender .... which prompted me to post pictures of my flypress bender over here..... are we long lost cousins:D

I never really saw my bender as being used on site but seeing yours has made me think maybe adding a stout bit of "bolt on" box section and a cylinder to mine might be useful for a job I might have a few months down the line.

Yes, those two rigs are strangely similar cuz. Low voltage power pacs make portability less of a hassle. They aren't cheap, and pretty slow, but way faster than the alternatives. I got mine from a guy unused for $150, lucky find.
Your machine looks very finely made, looks as if it pass muster to go on the Space Shuttle!
A tale of woe re the fab of mine or rather the first attempt: It was on the brink of completion when I gave the task of welding the top plate to a worker and went to town.
He fitted very carefully, from the outside. Then without operating the ram back and forth to check the clearances he welded the shit out it! Inside and out. I mean this guy was a WELDER. The slot could have been widened, but the pins were forever out of wack to the ram....Into the scrap pile..........It wasn't a joyous return from town for me ....or him........bm

That bender is stout! That thing looks super handy. I have an enerpac cylinder with a 10,000 psi 115 vac pump that i use as my hydraulic press, i attached a pic. I might steal your idea and make an attachment for my press similar to that.
Hey Larry, did Jesse ever get that hammer working? He called me for help with a foundation, i drove all the way down there, met with his assistant, and never heard a word. That was a neat hammer, just curious if he got it going.

I'm pretty sure if I'd had a 10,000 psi pump feeding my 4'' surplus cyl @ arround 80 ton It would have wrecked all my hard work, or popped the cyl :banghead:Overbuild..........bm

He ended up moving the hammer to Texas and I dont think its running there yet.... I think his whole world changed when Sandra left him
