I have a newer (1949!) 25 pound Little Giant. I am trying to remove the top die.  I hammered the wedge with moderate blows and the wedge wouldn't budge. I am afraid to hit it hard thinking it may damage the ways.

Any suggestions?

First find the Key wedge beside the Die (some people call it the SHIM). it usually slips in to one side of the Die by the shelf to hold it.

If you can slip a thin flat bar of steel from the other side, you can lightly tap backwards on the Key wedge and loosen it,  kind of tight on a little Giant 25#.

If you can grip the end on the "out" direction of the Key Wedge with a pair of vise-grips and tap the wedge LIGHTLY from the side you might loosen it. (this is why you leave them a LITTLE long).

Also DONOT just try to pound out the Die without loosening the KEY wedge first; or you may crack the receiving part of the slide-hammer assembly. You can Tap it though it may help but only a little.

WD40 soak never hurts.  Or a penetrating oil spray.

Generally the key wedge is pretty small on these hammers so may take some fiddling.

After you get it out clean up the receiver before replacing the Die.

You may want to replace the Key with a new one when you change or replace the Die.

Thanks Donk. It is the key wedge that seems to be stuck. It's probably been in place for 60 some years!  I'll try some penetrating oil and see if it helps.

ok good luck,

if that doesn't work there are some other things you can try, but would like to see some detailed pics of the top die and key (from both ends of the die plus front looking up,showing as much key and die as possible) if you can post them then at least we could see what you are up against.

PS  probably  most of these LG's have been stuck for 60 years at one point unless they came from a working shop.
