I built this Bull mutant hammer in 2003 and it was originally a 250, recently I lightened the tup by 50lbs so it would be more snappy because finishing blow were too slow.
Yeah, I know the anvil is too small....but when I first built it sat atop 5000 pounds of concrete that was above grade 10'' so it seemed reasonable at the time and it will still will do a decent job forging 3'' sq mounted on timbers but a 4 to 1 tup to anvil is a bit on the bang side, I want it to THUMP again so........
The old piece of round used for the anvil is 9''x 20.5'' x 369 lbs and the new piece is a 18x15x12'' x830 lb scrap injection mold (for .35 cents PP) which when capped with a piece of 2x12x15'' plate will weigh in at 932 lbs. The 2'' plate base under it at least 500 lbs so I'll be over 1450 lbs total with the lower dies so....7 to 1 + it will be...... [Image Can Not Be Found]
I'm going to do the PH test ( an IFI thread) before and after and there better be a diff or I'll bight a nail in half !!! [Image Can Not Be Found]

I can't lie. I have about zero knowledge on what I'm looking at, but I'm truly impressed with that gargantuan conglomeration that's going to serve you as the anvil bottom of that power hammer... I never thought to consider the weight to weight ratio when it came to power hammers, but I assume the idea parallels the hammer to anvil weight ratio I've read throughout IFI and anvilfire? If that's so, the dweeb in me would like to ask what's the ideal hammer to anvil weight ratio one should look for in a power hammer set-up???

I don't believe there's any point in going past 10 to 1. As the Ceco graph shows, there is little gained after 10 is reached. When my hammer was at 4 to 1 it worked ok for all intents and purposes, but after spotting that PERFECT chunk of iron in the pile for cheap, I couldn't resist....Like it was made to order AND it is true, true, true mechanically. I had to take it apart to fill an 11'' x 15 x 1.75 void with plate and the thing was built like an 800LB watch, the tolerances were anal and it probly cost 20-30 thousand dollars to make.

Well, it didn't get any prettier but it does hit harder.............Before: 10 blows = .430 .......Now 10 blows= .300 ..............Results are from IFI power hammer test.

I thought the improvement was pretty much a sure thing otherwise I wouldn't have done it. Even the ''Custom 150'' is slated for an improvement, though not by me. The only issue left for the 220 is the crappy timbers it sits on need to be replaced with a steel box filled with concrete but that will have to wait.
