I thought of welding it out completly but I clamped it up real well and semi-fish plated it.
All of the force is straight down with the butt welded to a two inch plate and the top plate ved out real well. With the 1/2 plate sandwiched between the thicker plate, the results should be pretty good:stomp:

I was unable to get 4in tubing with a 1/2 wall so I used 1/4 wall and lamanated 3/8 flat bar to the inside. Each side is plugwelded 3/4 dia in six places and the sealed welded on the ends. UMHW is common around here, mostly 1/4 and 3/8 thick. I used 1/4 on all four side of the 5in head and machined .015 off of each side of the hammer shaft. This gave me a shaft that was dead nuts straight and a very stiff sliding fit. The tooling block is 2in by 6in square. The tube was ved deep enough for the root pass to weld to the inside laminate.
I am going to spray LPS3 on the shaft not so much for lubrication but to keep it from rusting. All other metal will be painted. I am thinking red, white, and blue with the Globe and Ancher on one side and the American flag on the other.

Well, I finally got the shuttle valve and all of the fittings. Man, the price on brass fittings is awful. Got the hammer dies back from Beaver Heat Treat in Portland. What great guys. Real easy to work with and know their stuff. 50 RC
Installed the cyclinder and welded the lower bracket. I used the templet the was in the work book for the lower bracket and ended up shiming it forward 3/8 in. Oh well. Checked hammer opperation with shop air and it goes up and down.
Need to mount the water seperator and oiler and make up all air connections.
Need to finish running air line from bigger air compressor and move the hammer from the fab bay to the blacksmith area. That should be fun. Hope to get lots done today, but my 4 year old grandson is here and he is lots of help.:timebomb:Later

Looks like a great hammer project... I am going to build one of these myself, someday, maybe:help:
