Hello,
I have just completed a shop, and I want to build a power hammer. I don't have enough... any, experience with power hammers to make an educated decision. I have looked at Clay Spenser's Tire Hammer, the Kinyon air hammer. I have been a fabricator most of my life, starting in the shipyards in 1975, so I am up for the challenge.

Would it be better to buy an old little giant, is the cost the same as building?

I finally have a shop, but I had rotator cuff surgery, and I can't even shift the gears in my Beetle yet, nor can I move my anvil into my shop. But I have lots of plans.

I searched the archives, and found nothing that helps.

Thank you for your assistance.

Cost is relative to what supplies & materials you have access to and the price/condition of hammers for sale in your area.

I guess I have more iron, than cash to buy a working unit. I am in Bend Oregon. I have not seen any Power hammers, working or broken around here. So I think building will be the option. The main expenditure will most likely be the motor, if non-pneumatic is the choice.

I'd contact clay spencer and get the plans for the tire hammer.

If you've been a fabricator forever you could probably handle a kinyon style (plans from Abana)
I made a 100lb version that I regret selling. It hit way harder than my 75lb kuhn,

BTW- check out joe elliot if you are in bend:

I'd say if you have a suitable compressor, go with air...my 2cents worth.....:-)

Please tell us why you would go with air and what do you consider a "Suitable compressor".

Sure JW, Air hammers have better control; ie single blows and more head space imho......A 5hp that delivers a true 17.5cfm (not a 3450rpm 5hp:poop: ) will run up to a 100# shop built hammer just fine.....I love tire hammers btw.

Since your in Bend the first thing to do is go talk to Joe Elliot and ask him what he knows about local hammers for sale.. Joe has several Beaudrys that are not in use but not sure he wants to part with anything... I'd go see Jeff Webster in Sisters too... Both great guys who will steer you straight..

Whatever you are, be a good one.

Kenudo, I like the spring helve power hammers. The one I built cost next to nothing to build. which means if you have the material that's the way to go. But of course if you can buy one reasonably cheap that's the smart way to go.

Here is a link showing my hammer.

Hope this helps
