I visited Jack yesterday and his mobility is getting better. (For those of you who do not know, Jack suffered a stroke last year.) However, I think his lifestyle would be greatly improved with the addition of some grab bars in his house. I thought I would put this idea out there to see if anyone else wanted to get involved with this project.

At this point, the bars are in a preliminary design phase. The bar dimensions are similar to a handrail; 1 1/2" round, set 1 1/2" from the wall (mounted 36" from the ground). I will eventually have some pictures of his hallway, where they are most needed, and will post them when I get them.

There are several locations where the bars will need to have moveable sections. This is due to doorways, storage closets and shelves that are built into the hallway. Jack suggested a pivot as a way of allowing Jennifer to move them easily when needed.

If anyone is interested in helping, this is a list of what is needed:

Design input (I have some ideas but would welcome other suggestions)
Any surplus material, especially 1 1/4" (1 1/2" O.D.) pipe (medium or thin-wall is better)
Possible shop space for assembly, if a work party is involved. My place is available, but a larger space might be better if more convenient.

Right now I would just like a list of people who might be interested. I will have photographs and dimensions. Design (or other) suggestions would be welcome also. Jack would probably appreciate this as an NWBA thing. Jennifer didn't seem to feel comfortable asking, so I am. Some off-the-shelf bars might work in some locations, but this IS Jack, after all. Thank you,

Paul Casey
