Grant,
I recently found a great series of articles on heat treating tool steel by Dave Smucker. They are quite good (accessibly written, presumably accurate). I exchanged some email with him and ended up getting electronic copies of the docs. I thought I'd see about posting them here (with attribution to Dave, of course) because I think they'd be great reference material for members. Your thoughts?
They are in Word format, but I can convert to PDF.

Sure! I tried attaching them in the current format but they are too big:
- Improving Your Heat.doc - Your file of 2.28 MB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype.
- Heat-Treating Tool Steels.doc - Your file of 153.5 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype.
- Steels Useful for Tools.doc - Your file of 107.0 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype.
I will try sending them to your regular email.
Here's a blurb that David sent along to include with whatever gets posted.
"I teach a class in tool making -- mostly on heat treating -- each fall in October at the John C. Campbell Folk School. It is on making woodworking and blacksmithing tools -- and open to beginning blacksmith and woodworkers to advanced blacksmith that want to learn in depth on heat treating. Information at https://www.folkschool.org/ "
