I'm working on an old coal forge someone gave me and need to assemble a blower for it. Does anyone have an idea of the necessary CFM for a blower?

Lotta folks use the 164 CFM blower from Blacksmiths Depot. CFM is only one part of the equation, you also need good static pressure. If you don't have the pressure behind it, you won't get the rated CFM. CFM ratings are based on zero restriction or back pressure.

Are you making a hand crank blower or machine? I've seen folks use a hair dryer as a blower before, just gotta be careful not to have it strong enough to blow the ash back up in your face.

If you don't have enough pressure your gonna be doing more clinker clearing than forging unless you have really good coal. A good strong blower will move the clinkers out of the central area. Its nice to only have to clean your fire once or twice a day and just pull out the donut shaped clinker.

Thanks for the info, I'm putting an electric blower system because I have the parts minus the fan, I hope to find a hand crank blower at some point when I can afford it. I'm a rank beginner (emphasis on the rank) but am having fun building stuff I need from things i find online and in books. I'll check out the Blacksmith Depot blower.
