Hey, I need some good high-temperature firebrick for my forge. . . the wood-stove bricks I was using kinda turned into lava (much to my little brother's glee), and I don't know where a good place to find some would be. Can anyone give any recommendations?

When I needed some a couple years ago I ordered them through a stove/chimney type repair place. I think I looked up wood/gas heating fire places and then called up the closest one.

Or check out ceramic supply places near you.  Seattle Pottery Supply definitely has what you need on their website - they have soft fire bricks that can withstand more heat than hard fire brick.  Are you lining the forge or using bricks to block the opening?

Right, well I'm definitely too far from Portland for that to be of any use for me, but thanks anyway.

A bit of both, you might say. What I had done for my temporary forge was make a box of bricks with a Venturi burner in the side. It worked really well until I melted the bricks completely today. And thank you for the recommendation; I think that is where I will end up getting them.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Morgan,

One more suggestion:  You might want to stick with a high-temp hard brick for blocking the openings, as the higher-temp soft bricks might fall apart rather quickly from abuse.

My current forge is lined with castable refractory.  After seeing Bob Kramer's great demo on forge building at the Fall 2012 conference, my next forge might be a combination of white refractory board and Kaowool.  Kaowool alone works great (and heats up faster than refractory or brick) but eventually breaks down and gets airborne - essentially as bad as asbestos.  But used as a layer between the outside of the forge and an inner layer of white board it provides great insulation.  Or, maybe my next forge will just have a thicker layer of castable.  So many choices...
