Well I have had a disappointing failure this evening, I was trying to forge weld the cable hunks I have and I am not quite sure if its the cable itsself or the hammer. During the first couple attempts at hammering it to bar form, the hammer slowed to almost uselessness about 2 or 3 times. I started by warming to red and adding the flux then bringing it up to mid orange and then tightening the wire up as best I can. ( I do wonder about my strength since the injury ) then when the wire was stiff from tightening I brought it up to bright orange/yellow and proceeded to use the power hammer. I got 3-4 good hits them it petered out. So I went back to forge with it and same thing 2 more times. So I threw that hunk to the ground and tossed in the w-1 I had sitting and even at bright orange/yellow it took forever to try and draw out the neck to make a leaf and even after I for the neck thinned finally I could not get the bud to 'blossom' . The motor is a 3hp 1750 and runs fine, I just dont know if I can get the tension tighter on my own. It could be the limited strength I have since the accident in 04.
Any thoughts? Even from Sam who I know dislikes me.

Is this the 100LB Little Giant?
Are the belts slipping?
Have you adjusted the hammer for the thickness of material you are working?
I'm curious, what is the at rest clearance between the anvil and hammer when stopped at bottom dead center?
Who is Sam?
I don't know anything, I just like to ask questions.[Image Can Not Be Found]

Paul the hammer should run solid if its slowing down significantly the belts are not tight enough
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Larry,
I'll see if I can find a spare body to help adjust the tension.
J,
I thought I had the spacing set to give me about 3/16 thickness, but I will check again in the morning. Sam is the new Moderator we have, we butted heads on Don Fogs Blade board over stupid crap and despite my being decent commenting on his work he ignores me. I ddont blame him, I made a comment concerning his account picture reminding me of a perv I went to school with years ago. We did get along before that point I thought.

Is the belt really slipping? I'd try putting a chalk mark on it and watch to see if it stalls.
I'm not an expert on timing a LG. I seem to remember you need clearance to allow the head to "Whip". If it is too little it will not hit each time or will be soft> Better consult someone who knows what they are talking about.
Dave Manzer has a video that is supposed to tell all you would ever want to know in this area.
