I am new to blacksmithing, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with a homemade forge blower or bellows, and how to make them. I have a brake drum forge and will be using charcoal for fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't remember the name but there is a booklet out on making a bellows. There are also some articles floating around on them. I'm not much help at the moment. You could see if we have a copy of the bellows making booklet in the NWBA library possibly.

Ahhah we have it. "How to make a Blacksmith Bellows" is in the NWBA library. There are also you tube videos out on that too. Not sure of their quality. Seeing as since I haven't had the need to make a bellows from scratch yet. Though if you find a good source of information it'd be appreciated as I'm thinking some of the Fort Vancouver bellows could use a overhaul.

For a home-made forge blower, look into "How to Design and Build Centrifugal Fans for the Home Shop" by Dave Gingery.

No matter where you go... there you are.

Thanks for the input. I was able to make a centrifugal blower out of some scrap I had laying around. I will try and post pics soon.

Cool, please do so. Along with any information you'd like to share about making one.

Here are the pics of the blower. Made from old heating ducts, washing machine parts, and wood.

And, if you can put together a short how to article I will publish it in the Hot Iron News and/or our How-To section on this site.
