When I was making my fortune making damascus steel I made a bottom die, thimble shaped. Mashed a chunk of damascus in it with a 50# Little Giant. The slug was trimmed in a 2X72 belt grinder, silver soldered to roundstock, drilled and machined, sanded in a bench lathe, then cut from the bar, trimmed and shallow dimples drilled in the end. Etched in diluted ferric chloride.
Too bad I never kept one for my basement collection. I do have a sample of how a thimble was made, see the image.

Well when I saw thimble I first past over this thread.... Not much interest in sewing even with a cool thimble... But that is pretty cool I must say... Now why have you not built a set of damascus scissors to go with?
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Only sold a few, gave some to relatives, more of a see if I could make them deal, I get bored real quick with machine work unless it's making a tool for myself or a have to repair.
I don't have a picture but a welder friend got interesting in casting brass. He packed some steel tubing with BB's, fluxed and poured molten brass in it. I turned several thimbles from the brass and BB mix, real neat, brass with these ballon shapes of various sizes. Did a temper heat to turn the steel BB's blue, I made one for the welder and one for a relative that was a thimble maker, lost wax and fabbed up bronze.
Rule #1, when making something, make one for your basment collection.
