Hey all... I have a job coming up to build a driveway gate... I think the top bar will be 1/2" x 1 1/2" flat bar... It will be bent into a radius on the flat...How best does one do the job of punching for the pickets??? Bend the piece first, then drill the holes at an angle and drift?? That was my idea... If I punch the holes on the flat, then, once it is bent, the holes will be off... Any help will certainly be appreciated!!!

I think I would punch the holes while flat and then make the tenons at the angle you need to go though the hole

Whatever you are, be a good one.

Hi Lynn. I just picked up Mark Aspery's new book and he covers how to punch/drift angled pass through. Basically you use the slot punch then drift method for the hole, but you offset the slot punch on either side of the bar as needed so that when you drift, it's forced through at the angle needed.

Or make a jig to support the radius as neededdc after forming the curve, allowing you to punch the hole on the flat and then use angled tenons as Larry said. (Also covered in Mark's book).

as always

peace and love

Thanks Larry and Billy!
I might get itConfused Layout the holes on the radius (on the table), mark, drill or punch, and then once the steel is bent on the radius, drift to the right angle???
