We have been experimenting with powder coating to get a more durable finish for our hardware. The two areas we could use some advice on are:
How to get a nice matte black finish. So far its all too shiny.
What is the consensus on using infra-red heating? We have been using a converted commercial electric oven.

Advice is appreciated... Thanks!

you need to buy a lower gloss powder.
I used to do a lot of powdercoated production pieces, and I sent out the actual powdercoating, but my painters had no problem finding matte black powder.

Mostly, though, I would use a fine black wrinkle finish- it is matte, it looks great, and it doesnt show small scratches, dirt, fingerprints, and all the other stuff that makes a gloss finish look crummy in about 30 seconds.

I used to use a lot of powder from these guys- expensive, but they make finishes like nobody else on earth- including a bunch of things that look like metal, but dont rust-

I use their "cast" series of powder a lot- it actually looks like oil rubbed bronze, or sandblasted steel, or other metals, and it wears very well. Great for hardware, when you dont want your finished piece to look like part of a honda roof rack.

I'd suggest consulting with your powder supplier. What type/brand powder are you using? The chemists at most powder suppliers are very helpful.
