Hey Guys:
I have a little job to do... Make a stair railing for the back steps of our church...

Was working on making a cupping tool for under my LG 25 when my fuller broke... That's when I thought I should have got some pic's... That's when I thought about asking all you "skilled" blacksmiths how you make rail top cap??? I would like to build it out of what I have, cause this will not be a paid job... I have some 2 1/2" x 1/4" and thought that this might work well for the top cap... Uprights... maybe pipe.... Don't know yet, but I would like to make a cool top that is comfortable maybe with a bit of a scroll end on the downhill side... Thinking also, to reinforce the corners, maybe some "C" scrolls in the "blown over leaf style"... I think this is one of the most beautiful scrolls I've ever seen.. Doesn't need to be art work, but I have seen hand rails at some granges made of pipe and pipe fittings!!! They work, but there is no art to it...
Got any ideas??? I'm new to this...:help::help::help:

2 1/2 x 1/4 is too wide and too thin imo. If you can find some 1 1/4 or 1'' pipe you can flaten it cold into an oval with your 25 pretty easily which makes a nice griprail.

Lynn, check with your local inspector to be certain, but most codes call for a "graspable" handrail. Some places say 2" across max, others 2.25" across.

Here's a page from a handy site: http://inspectapedia.com/Stair.....bility.htm

(Their home page, for anybody interested, is: http://inspectapedia.com/index.htm )

Can you rig a bottom swage and make your stock a "C" shaped cross section?

No matter where you go... there you are.

There are some specifications, Its been so long since looked at the book I am not sure what they are but its a sectional thing... the wider it is the thinner it must be..... so a 1 1/2" sq would pass but so would a 1 3/4" X 1/2" Personaly I think 2.5" is to wide but maybe you could use your hammer and cup it in a die? then it would make a nice top cap....

Whatever you are, be a good one.

Thanks Guys;

I was working to make a die for the LG25 to cup the 2 1/2" x 1/4" when the fuller broke... That's when I thought I would ask the folks who know way more than me... Bruce suggested pipe... Could make a great grip rail... I still wanted to do something with the flat bar 'cause the possibilities for scrolling and such are so good.. I may still finish the tooling I started with and see what kind of cross section I can come up with out of the material I have...
I wanted to build this from stuff I have and not have to buy material to make it... I'll let you know what I learn... Seems I'm always learning... Almost never making money!!:stomp::stomp::stomp:

Handrail grasp ability From Calif. building code, 1012.4: round tubing sizes 1 1/4" min to 2" max, non circular around perimeter 4" min to 6 1/4" max WITH a max cross section of 2 1/4" ( this means if it is oval the long measurement is 2.25 or less or if rectangle the diag is 2.25 or less) Also all edges must have a 1/8 radius.
