The recent Abana mag has pictures of people with 35lb hammers looking like they are going to strike with someone holding a punch.
Never hold a tool tool with your hands when strikers are being used. Use tongs. The pictures were for fun but show a real dumb way of breaking a wrist and ending a career .

It took me a bit to get used to holding punches with tongs, but once I did I never looked back.

Seems like I have some sort of built-in governor that prevents me from swinging at full power when my hand is that close to the target 😉

I recently discontinued my ABANA membership for political differences despite having suffered through the 2006 ABANA conference bullshit where they supported Jerry Kagele over the NWBA.

As a full time metal artist, I no longer feel that ABANA is relevant in my career. I think local/regional associations as well as hammerins, and the information available on the internet by far supersedes the information in the ABANA mags.

While I feel there is a need for some sort of national blacksmithing organization, I think the current state of ABANA falls woefully short of what is currently needed. Hence, I think ABANA should gracefully pass away, and a new, more current organization be formed to take its place.

Lol John. Yep I skipped the conference here because of the kagele crap. Abana did basically tell the NWBA members to F off. I am not a member for the reasons you mention.(that and cost)
I almost titled this " to throw a kagele" because I know that mentioning a fun pic as dangerous seems to be over legal in thinking;) but Abana should think about the example they set. gloves shmog ( ref to conversations on glove wearing), hand on a punch when striking is.. real silly. And painful.
If I were a member of Abana I might draw their attention to the dumbassery of striking a wrist.

lol same here.and man does it go overboard when someone says" i'll strike for you"( I used to have double jointed thumbs but a few miss hits later I am at normal;)

I wear a left glove religiously and keep the right and bare most of the time. One of these days I'm going to find a southpaw to give all of my right hand gloves to. 😉

I let my affiliate membership lapse for similar reasons and I'm starting to wonder about renewing with ABANA.

I'd rather join the N.W.B.A to help support this community if that were the case.

Grant?
